Fun Facts about Intolerance to Gluten

Emily’s explanation of gluten intolerance

Gluten intolerance is a digestive disorder. When us gluten intolerant folks (I shall call us “gluties”) consume food containing gluten it causes damage to the villi of the small intestine. Why do you care about this?? Well, villi line the small intestine and support the absorption of nutrients into our bloodstreams. When us gluties don’t absorb enough nutrients our body isn’t healthy and this then leads to the long list of gluten intolerant symptoms which we have all experienced and desperate to make disappear. Fortunately, avoiding gluten can treat the problem and gluties can get back to a healthy happy life. Easy? It can be once you know what food contains gluten and how to avoid them.

 

Gluten free Symptoms

The following are a variety of symptoms that gluties can experience once consuming gluten, but we will never have to think about them again because us gluties know how to kick gluten in the butt!

  • Fatigue/Tiredness
  • Bloating
  • Headaches/Migraines
  • Depression
  • Itchy skin or rash
  • Abdominal pain and cramping
  • Diarrhoea
  • Constipation
  • Anxiety
  • Vomiting

Sneaky Gluten is found in the following:

  • Wheat
  • Rye
  • Barley

Unfriendly Food that commonly contains wheat (some might seem obvious, others may have tricked you):

  • Pasta
  • Bread
  • Biscuits
  • Cakes
  • Muffins
  • Cereal
  • Beer (Replace with Cider for Beer pong purposes)
  • Gravy
  • Salad Dressing
  • Sauces
  • Sausages
  • Pastries
  • Donuts (I know what you thinking, haven’t had one in years? And now you’re craving one. Don’t stress I will post a donut recipe in no time).

Food that shocked me by containing sneaky gluten. You can fool me once, but never again!

One simple rule…don’t touch anything that is unhealthy and yummy to eat. Just kidding, although I admit it did feel like that at the start.

  • Fried food (I know, joke’s on me right)
  • Malt
  • Whiskey (that whiskey tour in Scotland was very joyful! Said no gluten intolerant person ever)
  • Salad Dressing
  • Soy Sauce
  • Seasoned Chips (Double, no triple check before ordering at a pub otherwise you will have to leave the party early and miss out on all the fun).
  • Chicken stock

    I’m not gluten sensitive, but one of my best friends has celiac disease so I’ve become pretty aware that gluten hides in many unlikely foods – even cold cuts and fast food chicken breasts! And, like you said, chips and many kinds of frozen potatoes! How gluten gets into potatoes is beyond me. As a vegan, I cook the majority of my meals myself and it was quite a surprise to me how little gluten I ate once I started cooking from scratch.

      I agree, it shocks me every time. It is almost like they are injecting gluten in food for no reason. It is a lot healthier and cheaper to make from scratch 🙂
